Sunny Creek Farm began in 1990 as Green Creek Sprouts. Lee Ewing then 28, moved to western North Carolina from California, and began working as an assistant chef at the Pine Crest Inn in Tryon. During his time there he noticed that the Inn had great difficulty obtaining fresh sprouts that were of good quality. Drawing on his experience as manager of a sprout farm in California, he immediately saw an opportunity for a new sprout farm in the Carolinas. With a small loan he humbly began growing alfalfa sprouts and mung beans and started distributing them to the local stores and restaurants. By 1995, the business was growing fast, and had become a major supplier for not only local stores, but some larger grocery chains.
Today, Sunny Creek Farm is the largest supplier of fresh sprouts in the southeast. The facility has grown into a modern, state-of-the-art plant, with a well trained staff and comprehensive food safety program. Along with its many varieties of fresh sprouts, they also handle specialty produce items such as watercress, arugula, fresh mushrooms, soy products, tropical fruit, and many more.
