Jeremy Allen built Spring Lake Family Farms in 2014 as an aquaponics system for growing lettuces. Aquaponics eliminates the use of synthetic nutrients by utilizing fish that create the nutrients for plant production. In return, the plants filter the water the fish need. The water is constantly circled and recycled through the system, picking up the nutrients and depositing them to the plants.
Spring lake Family Farms currently has three 850 gallon tanks where they raise striped bass and yellow perch. Connected to the same system, they have 1,600 square feet of hydroponic grow troughs with various lettuce varieties.
