Southern Swiss Dairy, located in Waynesboro, Georgia, is run by Ginny and Jimmy Franks. In 2010, they began processing milk on the farm, shifting from selling to a co-op to bottling their own products. This bold move created a beloved line of cream-top milk offerings, including buttermilk, whole milk, and ice cream mix, that quickly became local favorites.
The operation’s namesake is a special breed of cow: the Brown Swiss. Known as gentle giants, these large, sturdy cows are celebrated for their rich, high-butterfat milk and their ability to thrive in Georgia’s hot, often unforgiving climate. As farmer Ginny Franks puts it, “they’re just as stubborn as we are!” Their docile nature, longevity, and adaptability make them the perfect partners for the Franks’ hardworking dairy.
Southern Swiss began with 800 cows purchased from a Mennonite preacher. Ginny, a fifth-generation dairy farmer, and Jimmy, who shared her love for dairying, built the business together. In October 2022, the farm transitioned to the next generation as daughter Whitney and her husband Ron assumed management of the herd, while Ginny and Jimmy continue to oversee creamery operations.
