Local Lands is a black-owned, family-operated farm on 20 acres in Ellenwood, Georgia, founded by first-generation farmers Asa and Raphaela Polanco. The farm is dedicated to regenerative agricultural practices, emphasizing sustainability and community impact.
Specializing in pasture-raised eggs, Local Lands uses chicken manure as a natural fertilizer to enrich the soil, benefiting both the land and ecosystem. Recently, they upgraded their production with an egg washing machine, doubling their output and improving efficiency from labor-intensive methods.
Local Lands is actively engaged with the community through a partnership with Atlanta Harvest, where they are establishing a market stand for local produce. Their commitment to addressing food insecurity is evident in their nonprofit initiative, Cultivating Humanity, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic. This program distributes food boxes and has evolved into a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model that accepts EBT payments for broader accessibility.
Raphaela Polanco's background in healthcare and nutrition from Toronto fuels her passion for food security. Asa Polanco, a former general contractor from New York City, sought peace in farming after family skepticism about their move to Georgia. They prioritize strategic business practices over traditional farming methods, shifting towards wholesale sales to enhance efficiency. They have 12 employees, including their son Eliyahu who manages Atlanta Harvest. Asa and Raphaela are not only cultivating crops but also nurturing relationships within their community, impacting food insecurity in Georgia.
