In 1974, Harvest Farm of Whately got its start as a small vegetable stand supplied by a large garden run by partners Gary Gemme and David Wojcieshowski. Gary and David were graduates of the University of Massachusetts that fell in love with farming while running the farm stand and decided to make the farm a wholesale operation in 1978.
Today, Gary only farms varieties of crops that he knows grow exceptionally well on his land in order to keep the product consistently excellent and make a profit. Gary grows 140 acres of collard greens, kale, tomatoes, green cabbage, spearmint, eggplant, and handpicked green beans.
Although the farm is no longer certified organic, it uses sustainable management practices such as integrated pest management (IPM) techniques involving pest population monitoring and crop rotations in order to break up pest life cycles by disturbing their food source. The farm easily passed two recent unannounced FDA residual pesticide tests on their crops and proved their minimal use of chemical sprays and skilled management.
