The Gullah Farmers Cooperative was founded in 2010 to establish a local food market for their Farmer-Members so they could continue the agricultural tradition of the Gullah community.
The farmers cooperative helps them promote their small farms and rich cultural heritage dating back to the early 1600s of Coastal West Africa. The Gullah- Geechee descendants started growing rice and long fiber cotton to sell, while growing okra, peas and watermelon for food.
Since the Gullah Farmers Cooperative’s inception, they now have ten farmers in the coastal counties of South Carolina: Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, Charleston, and Jasper.
The Cooperative’s goals are to market local crops to the Eastern and Southeastern United States to build professional opportunities for young farmers in the Gullah communities.
