Martex Farms was established in 1989. The Southern coast of Puerto Rico was chosen as its locale due to its optimal climate conditions, soil attributes, pure water sources, topographical characteristics, and transportation logistics. The first five to six years of operation were dedicated to planting and developing their mango orchards until they reached full commercial production maturity. The first significant export crop was produced in 1996 with 200,000 4kg boxes that were sold primarily within the European marketplace.
Since then, Martex has continued to grow operations by expanding production volume through the acquisition of new farms and has diversified by introducing numerous products. In 2000, Martex Farms purchased three of Fruits International’s farms and all of its assets, including a packaging plant, hot water treatment plant, and the rights to use the company’s well-established Pango Mango brand name.
At the time the new acquisition gave Martex a 70% stake in Puerto Rican mango production and made the company the largest domestic mango producer in the U.S., producing over 2 million 4kg boxes (20 million pounds) of fruit for export each year.
Today, Martex has achieved strong sales and has established a well-respected name and reputation in the industry for safe premium quality products, particularly in the premier distribution and retailing chains in Europe.
