Sweet Grass founders Al and Desiree Wehner knew there had to be a better way to farm. They were introduced to a New Zealand style rotational grazing systems, a method where "cows could be cows." The cows are moved around the farm into a new field every 12 hours and kept cool under a pivot system. This approach maintains fresh grazing pastures and a healthy environment for the cows.
The Wehners wanted to illustrate the purity and simplicity of knowing where your milk comes from. Artisan cheeses were the perfect challenge for showing off the high-quality grass-based milk from cows that don't ever have to be in barns. Sweet Grass Cheese was born in 2002 and with the help of daughter Jessica and son-in-law Jeremy, the Wehners were soon making and selling award-winning cheeses.
Jeremy and Jessica eventually bought the dairy and processing facility and now they distribute to over 38 states with five core cheeses that have won more than a dozen awards form the American Cheese Society.
