The rustic road leading to Green Haven Plant Farm winds around a pond and arrives at a large plant farm, founded over 30 years ago. The property was owned by Lonnie and Judy McKenzie. Their son, Bob, once came home from a school science class with an idea for an underground greenhouse. Lonnie and Judy didn’t want to discourage him, so they built a small greenhouse heated by a wood stove.
Green Haven Plant Farm started growing tomatoes and hydroponic lettuce in 1983. By 1985, they were one of only five hydroponic-farming operations in North Carolina.
The McKenzie’s passed their operation to Matt Whitaker in 2011. Matt grew up working on his grandfather’s tobacco farm and graduated from NC State with a degree in Horticulture Science and a minor in Agriculture Business. He has helped Green Haven grow and added two greenhouses to keep up with the demands of his quality products.
