Carolina Mushroom Farm began in 2016 by Steve Carroll, who worked as a turf research scientist at the time. Steve grew up raising hogs on the farm, but the old hog barns became vacant over time. He cleaned out the barns and put them through an intense sanitization process to create a sterile growing environment for the mushrooms. The farm has set a precedent that other empty hog barns in NC can be re-purposed to grow food. Steve is now retired and currently works full-time at the farm.
Other aspects of Carolina Mushroom Farm embrace sustainability. Excess mushrooms are composted or fed to the cows on the farm. The mushroom substrate is used as a fertilizer on the fields, and the plastic grow bags are recycled. This allows there to be little waste on the farm.
