Mary Cove and Allison Culbreth became friends in graduate school at North Carolina State University. Both scientists, they shared a vision of creating jobs in their rural community through sustainable agriculture. Thus, Blue Thumb Farms started as doodles in a notebook in 2017.
Blue Thumb Farms is now a thriving hydroponic farm with over 12,000 feet of grow space and a 2,500-square-foot processing and storage facility. Their farming practices are pesticide-free with an emphasis on water and energy conservation. Mary and Allison plant, maintain the crops, harvest, and pack the lettuce themselves. The lettuces take about 3-4 weeks to grow depending on the time of year and sunlight availability.
The duo hope that they can provide local salad that’s directly accessible in their community, and pave the way for future female farmers.
