During WWII, Mas Masumoto's family was interned in Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona. The family lost all their property, and their entire investment in the farmland they leased. Once released, the family moved back to California, started farming again, and eventually purchased their own land. Years later, Mas farmed rice in Japan for two years while studying abroad and earning a bachelor's degree from Cal Berkeley, and later, a master's from UC Davis. He eventually returned to the Central Valley, purchased 40 acres from his parents, and started his own farm.
In 1987, Mas and Marcy married, began to certify their farm as organic, and started their quest for the perfect Peach. They've learned to embrace weeds as native grasses, and appreciate older trees and old varieties.
Masumoto Family Farm started selling their best Peaches to Chez Panisse in 1993, and four years later, the Sun Crest Peach was nominated to the Slow Food Ark of Taste. In 2000, Masumoto Family Farm began delivering the best of their best peaches to FreshPoint, each flat carefully hand-packed by Marcy, Nikiko, and Korio. Following graduations from Cal Berkeley and University of Texas Austin, Nikiko has returned home to become the fourth generation of Masumoto family farmers. We are all thrilled with her decision, and look forward to another generation of wonderful Masumoto fruit!
